Herkunft Der Steppenwaran bewohnt ganz Afrika und ist oft in Gewässernnähe zu finden. Viele Halter denken das diese Waranart sehr trocken gehalten werden muss. Wir halten das für falsch, den eine zutrockene Haltung hat oft Häutungsprobleme zur Folge.

Terrarientyp/Klima Der Steppenwaran bewohnt ganz Afrika und ist oft in Gewässernnähe zu finden. Viele Halter denken das diese Waranart sehr trocken gehalten werden muss. Wir halten das für falsch, den eine zu trockene Haltung hat oft Häutungsprobleme zur Folge.

 

Ernährung Seine Maulform und sein kräftiges Gebiss lassen auf einen Schneckenfresser bzw. Hartschalenfresser schließen. Schnecken werden auch in der Gefangenschaft willig gefressen. Steppenwarane stellen keine großen Ansprüche was die Nahrung angeht. Es wird alles gefressen was in das Maul passt. Man sollte sich durch das willige fressen aber nicht dazu verleiten lassen die Tiere zu überfüttern. Steppenwarane werden sehr schnell sehr Fett, was ihre Bewegungsaktivität sehr einschränkt. Fette Steppenwarane liegen meist gelangweilt im Terrarium rum und sind deshalb keine attraktiven Pfleglinge mehr. Insekten sollten den Hauptbestandteil der Nahrung ausmachen. Nager sollten sehr selten gegeben werden. Hühner oder Wachtelküken können dagegen öfter verfüttert werden.

Ab hier sollte klar sein Steppenwarane bei guter Fütterung sehr groß werden können. Also sicherlich keine Tiere für kleine Terrarien!
